With labor day around the corner, it’s time to collect a few easy and delicious recipes for your weekend gatherings. Shish kabobs are fantastic because there are so many options to change up the fixins on the kabobs based on what your family and friends enjoy the most. Here’s one of our favorites to make teriyaki shish kabobs.
Who invented shish kabobs?
Shish kabobs, or shish kebabs, are versatile, quick meals on a handy skewer. They traveled to the United States from the Middle East. Some of the variations of the shish kebabs from Turkey are likely the earliest known examples. The Turkish word ‘şiş’ means spit or skewer, and kebab refers to mutton or lamb. Because of how easy they are to make and eat, shish kabobs have spread around the world and in many different cultures.
Ingredients:
- 2 pounds TBS beef top sirloin, cut into 1 ½ cubes
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup soy sauce
- 1 cup ketchup
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons ground ginger
- 3 small zucchini, cut into 1-inch slices
- ½ pound medium fresh mushrooms, whole
- 2 large red bell peppers, cut into 1-inch pieces
- 2 cups cubed fresh or canned pineapple
- 1 package of large cherry tomatoes
Directions:
- Prepare the marinade by mixing the sugar, soy sauce, ketchup, garlic powder, and ginger in a large bowl. Pour half of the marinade into a separate container and refrigerate.
- Add the beef to the bowl with the remaining marinade and stir to ensure all the meat is covered. Seal the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
- Heat the grill to medium. Prepare the kabobs by alternating pieces of meat with vegetables and pineapple on skewers. Discard the leftover marinade from the bowl with the meat.
- Grill the kabobs until the beef is cooked through–approximately 12-15 minutes. Turn occasionally.
- Make a sauce with the reserved marinade (refrigerated separately from the meat). Bring the marinade to a boil in a small saucepan over medium heat, and then cook for one minute. Serve either drizzled over the skewers or on the side in small sauce dishes.
