With the Superbowl coming up soon, many American households are already planning their gameday party menus. Top on the list for most sports fans is chicken wings. In a fan survey conducted by the Seattle Seahawks last year, over a third of respondents said chicken wings were their favorite Superbowl party food. It’s likely not a scientific analysis, but it goes to show that people love their wings. Did you ever wonder why chicken wings are so popular for gameday buffets?
The craze started somewhere around 2010. People are always looking for something good to serve at a party, and while pizza was commonly associated with watching football, it gets cold and soggy when left out for very long. Ribs are good finger foods, but the cost of feeding a hungry mob of football fans can skyrocket. So somewhere along the way, people tried chicken wings–little bits of seasoned meat eaten with various dipping sauces that taste delicious hot or cold.
There are many ways to make chicken wings, and the choices for seasoning and dipping sauces are endless. Here’s a simple chicken wings recipe to make a stress-free entree for your next party buffet.
Simple Chicken Wings Ingredients:
- 2 pounds of chicken wings
- 2 teaspoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ⅛ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ cup of your favorite hot sauce
- 2 tablespoons of honey
- 4 tablespoons of butter
- Blue cheese, ranch, or other favorite dipping sauce
- A vegetable platter
Simple Chicken Wings Directions:
- Preheat your oven to 400.
- Place a wire rack onto a rimmed baking sheet.
- Toss the wings with oil, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
- Place the wings onto the baking sheet, and bake for about 50 to 60 minutes until the skin is golden and crispy. Flip the wings over halfway through the process.
- Prepare the glaze. After the wings have finished baking, whisk the hot sauce and honey together in a small saucepan and bring it to a simmer over low heat. Add the butter and stir until melted.
- Continue to cook the sauce for about 2 minutes until the butter is slightly reduced.
- Turn the broiler onto low, and toss the baked wings with the glaze. Put the wings back onto the baking sheet and broil until the glaze carmelizes–only about 3 minutes.
- Serve immediately with a selection of dipping sauces and a vegetable tray.
