Grilled Oysters – Fresh Oysters

May 3, 2020 by The Butcher Shop

Grilled Oysters

Those who enjoy consuming shellfish often like the taste of oysters. These saltwater mollusks found in waterways like oceans and bays are popular for their flavor, diminished fat and calorie content, in addition to their relatively high concentrations of nutrients like various differentiations of the Vitamin B complex, protein, magnesium, copper, zinc, iron, and selenium.

That said, the size and contour of said sea creatures can make preparation difficult. The Butcher Shop, which sells high quality, grass-fed meats, fresh seafood, and top-notch produce products to the residents of Southern Oregon, invites our customers and oyster lovers in general to read the following short piece about another potential preparation method, grilled oysters.

The Preparation Of Grilled Oysters

Important Considerations

The physical makeup of an oyster precludes prospective chefs from merely tossing said shellfish on a grill and letting said edible item sear. Proper grillingGrilled Oysters techniques will correlate to the mollusk’s size, shape, and the cook’s shucking abilities.

Oysters have protected coverings called shells. Unfortunately, however, they cannot be grilled still attached to said coverings. Ergo, the shucking process involves removing the creature’s shell without damaging the oyster’s meat. The preparer’s ability to execute this procedure will often determine how effective the shellfish can be grilled.

Shucking is typically performed using a special implement known as a shucking knife. Appropriate removal technique calls for the individual in question to place the instrument’s tip at the base of the oyster’s hinge, twist by applying force, move or twist the tool upward and open the hinge. Once the hinge is released, one must then slide the knife inside the shell and carefully remove the oyster.

Prospective chefs should bear in mind that oysters can be somewhat gooey and meaty and damaging them during extraction can occur. Ergo, extra precaution should be taken when transferring said items from shell to plate or container.

The Grilling Process

Once the oyster is separated from its shell, they can be seasoned using whatever spices, condiments or sauces that are your favorites. Once prepared, the grilling process can commence.

The size of the mollusks in question comes into play when grilling. Larger, thicker oysters can be placed directly onto the grill. However, experienced chefs recommend grilling said items using barbecue gloves. These products will enable the preparer to cook the oysters by hand. Tools like tongs could cause the meat to break apart.

That said, if the products are smaller, culinary experts suggest placing them atop a grill-friendly container. This will prevent said shellfish from cooking too fast, which may cause them to lose their flavor.
