How To Grill Salmon

August 7, 2018 by The Butcher Shop

Grilling Recipe For Salmon

Grilling salmon is a fun and rewarding experience for the whole family (rewarding in the sense that you get a delicious meal afterward). Even so, some people can be a bit apprehensive about cooking fish, especially over a grill. In reality, it’s not nearly as intimidating as it seems. Here’s all you’ll need to know to make a delicious grilled fish fillet.

What You Need

To make this recipe, make sure you have these ingredients and tools on hand.

  • Salmon fillets (1 and 1/2 lbs worth, about 5 fillets).Grilled Salmon
  • Sea salt (1 teaspoon).
  • Freshly ground black pepper (2 teaspoons).
  • Fresh lemon juice (2 tablespoons, about 1 lemon).
  • Soy sauce (1/3 cup).
  • Minced garlic (3 cloves).
  • Olive oil (1/3 cup).
  • Cayenne pepper (to taste).
  • Grill (gas or charcoal) plus fuel.
  • Meat thermometer.
  • Sealable plastic bags or containers.
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (for sauce, optional).

Cooking Instructions

1. Marinate

Mix together all the ingredients besides the fillets in a large plastic bag or container. When well combined, place the fish into the container, coat thoroughly in the marinade, then seal and store in the refrigerator for at least two hours and up to 12.

2. Preheat

Half an hour before cooking, light the grill. Aim for high heat and allow it to build up heat. If you want to impart some extra smoky flavor, toss on some wood chips soaked in hot water after the grill has warmed up. Woods like peach and oak are good choices for fish.

Additionally, prior to lighting the grill, let the fish sit out at room temperature to warm up slightly for a more even cook.

3. Grill

Once the grill and the fish have come up to temperature, place the fillet skin side down onto the grill grates over direct heat. Cook the fish for around 4 to 6 minutes per side, turning only once. Check the internal temperature of your fish with a food thermometer, looking for a temperature of around 145 degrees Fahrenheit in the center. The flesh should flake apart easily with a fork, too.

4. Serve

Once the fish has reached the right temperature and texture, take it off the grill and serve immediately. Dig in next to some roasted vegetables, potatoes, or rice and a wedge of lemon. To really amp up the flavor, you could also boil down the remaining marinade liquid into a sauce by letting it simmer on the stove while you grill and tossing in a chunk of butter at the end for some extra richness (for safety reasons, make sure it reaches a boil before serving it).

Conclusion

Now you’ve got all you need to make a delicious grilled fish dinner like a pro. If you’re in the mood for grilling up some salmon, come visit the Butcher Shop for all your fresh fish and delicious vegetable needs.
