February 18, 2016 by The Butcher Shop Leave a Comment

Corned Beef Hash in a Frying PanFor people all over the world, St. Patrick’s Day can have different meanings and different traditions involved. There are many different things that you can do, but perhaps one of the most famous traditions is having corned beef and hash for dinner that night. It is something that became popular during World War II, thanks to rationing and the need to eat meat that could be kept for extended periods of time without spoiling. Nowadays, people can easily make it at home for when they want a great meal for St. Patrick’s Day.

If you are looking to make it for your family this year, you want to make sure you get the corned beef right away, as many people tend to make it. Now, if you have never mad corned beef hash before, then do not worry, because it is popular enough that you can find everything you need for it. Each person will make theirs differently, and you may find some ingredients in one that you will not find in another. That is just the way that it goes. This recipe from Simply Recipes makes for a great meal for any time of the day.

Ingredients

2-3 Tbsp unsalted butter

1 medium onion, finely chopped (about 1 cup)

2-3 cups finely chopped, cooked corned beef

2-3 cups chopped cooked potatoes

Salt and pepper

Method

  1. Heat butter in a large skillet on medium heat. Add the onion and cook a few minutes, until translucent.
  2. Mix in the chopped corned beef and potatoes. Spread out in the pan. Turn the heat to medium-high and press down on the mixture with a metal spatula.
  3. Don’t stir everything, but let it brown instead. You can always use your spatula to look underneath and see if they are browning. When browned, use the spatula to flip over in the pan. Continue to cook until the potatoes and the corned beef is nicely browned.
  4. Remove from heat and add plenty of freshly ground black pepper, and add salt to taste.

You can then serve this alone, or add some eggs and cabbage to make a whole breakfast out of it. You will certainly not be hungry after eating this hearty St. Patrick’s meal.
