Interested in trying something new, but perhaps you have some family members that are pretty picky about what they eat? Gyros are a popular grab-and-go food, but not everyone is keen on eating lamb. You can still enjoy this Greek-inspired pocket sandwich by making beef gyro sandwiches.
Gyro is a Greek word that means “spin.” Traditional gyro meat is placed onto a vertical rotisserie over a heat source. The meat is sheared off in strips as it cooks. Gyros are most often made with lamb but are also made with pork or beef.
Beef Gyro Sandwiches Ingredients
- 1 pound TBS ground beef
- 4 pita pocket halves
- 3 cups lettuce, shredded
- 2 large tomatoes, diced
- 1 small onion, sliced
- 1 ½ teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon pepper
Ingredients for Yogurt Sauce
- 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
- ⅓ cup cucumber, seeded and chopped
- 2 tablespoons onion, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon dried dill
- 1 clove of garlic, minced
Beef Gyro Sandwiches Directions:
- Combine all the ingredients for the yogurt sauce in a bowl and refrigerate.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper and mix it into the ground beef. Divide the beef and form it into four patties.
- Grill the patties over medium heat on each side until the center of the patty reaches 160F.
- Allow the patties to rest for 10 minutes. Then use a sharp knife to cut the patties into thin slices.
- Fill the pita pockets with the beef slices, lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. Drizzle the yogurt sauce over the fillings.
These Gyro-inspired sandwiches go well with rice pilaf or even french fries. Best of all, kids love to assemble the pockets, too!
