How Do You Make Slow-Cooker Salsa Chicken?
Slow-cooker salsa chicken is made by combining chicken breasts, salsa, taco seasoning, and a few other simple ingredients in a slow-cooker, then cooking until the chicken is tender and easy to shred. The result is juicy, flavorful chicken that can be served in tacos, rice bowls, salads, burritos, or sandwiches.

- 2 cups salsa
- 1 packet taco seasoning
- 1 can diced green chiles
- 1 tablespoon lime juice
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh cilantro for garnish
Directions
1. Layer the Slow-Cooker
Place the chicken breasts in the bottom of the slow-cooker. Pour the salsa over the chicken and add the taco seasoning, diced green chiles, lime juice, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
2. Cook Low and Slow
Cover and cook on low for 6 hours or on high for 3-4 hours, until the chicken is tender.
3. Shred and Serve
Remove the chicken and shred it using two forks. Return the shredded chicken to the slow-cooker and stir to coat in the sauce. Serve warm.
Butcher’s Tips for Success
- Adjust the heat: Mild salsa keeps the recipe family-friendly, while hot salsa or diced jalapeños add extra kick for anyone who loves spicy meals.
- Add beans and corn: Stir in black beans and sweet corn during the last 30 minutes of cooking for a heartier one-pot dinner.
- Make it creamy: Mixing in a few ounces of cream cheese at the end creates a creamy salsa chicken that is perfect for tacos, dips, or burrito bowls.
