Easy Baked Halibut

May 1, 2025 by The Butcher Shop

Full of fresh flavor and quick to cook, this easy baked halibut is the answer to your weeknight dinner dilemma. Halibut’s firm texture turns perfectly flaky in the oven, while its mild flavor makes it an excellent canvas for various marinades and toppings. This popular fish is also a fantastic source of protein and is rich in nutrients like selenium, magnesium, and B vitamins. Easy baked halibut is a great way to get a nutritious meal on your family’s table in under 30 minutes.

Recipe for Easy Baked Halibut

Ingredients:

  • 4 halibut fillets (about 6 ounces each)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano or thyme
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Lemon slices and fresh parsley, for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

1. Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Lightly grease a baking dish or line it with parchment paper for easy cleanup.

2. Prepare the Marinade
In a small bowl, mix the olive oil, lemon juice, minced garlic, oregano (or thyme), salt, and pepper together.

3. Season the Fish
Place the halibut fillets in the baking dish. Brush both sides generously with the marinade and let them sit for 10–15 minutes to absorb the flavor.

4. Bake the Halibut
Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until the fish flakes easily with a fork and is opaque throughout. Cooking time will vary depending on the thickness of your fillets.

5. Garnish and Serve
Garnish with fresh parsley and lemon slices if desired. Serve immediately with your favorite sides like roasted vegetables, rice pilaf, or a crisp green salad.

Tips & Variations

  • Don’t overcook: Check for doneness early and remove from the oven as soon as the halibut flakes easily, so it doesn’t dry out.
  • Add a crust: Try topping your fillets with panko breadcrumbs mixed with parmesan and herbs for a crunchy finish.
  • Try other flavorings: To create a more complex flavor profile, swap in dill, capers, or even a drizzle of white wine.
