You’ve probably tried chicken, pork, shrimp, and maybe even tofu fried rice. But have you ever tried using bison? This slightly adventurous meat is lean and flavorful, adding a rich, hearty element to a satisfying and nutritious dish. Whether you want to try something new or impress guests with a wild twist on a classic, bison fried rice is the way to go.
Recipe for Bison Fried Rice
Ingredients:
- 1 lb of ground bison
- 3 cups of cooked jasmine rice (day-old rice works best as it’s less likely to clump together)
- 2 eggs, lightly beaten
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves minced garlic
- 1 cup of frozen mixed vegetables
- 3 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 2 green onions, sliced thinly for garnish.
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
1. Cook the Bison
Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the ground bison and cook until browned, breaking it up into small pieces as it cooks. Once done, remove the bison from the skillet and set it aside.
2. Sauté the Aromatics
In the same skillet, add the chopped onion and garlic. Cook until the onion is translucent and the garlic is fragrant, about 2-3 minutes.
3. Add the Vegetables
Toss in the mixed vegetables and cook for another 3-4 minutes, until tender.
4. Cook the Eggs
Push the vegetables to one side of the skillet and pour the beaten eggs into the other side. Scramble the eggs until fully cooked, then mix them with the vegetables.
5. Combine Everything
Add the cooked rice to the skillet, followed by the cooked bison. Pour in the soy sauce and sesame oil, stirring everything together until well combined. Let the rice cook for a few minutes, allowing it to get a bit crispy on the bottom.
6. Season and Garnish
Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper if needed. Sprinkle sliced green onions over the top for a fresh, vibrant finish.
Serving Suggestions
Bison fried rice is a complete meal on its own, but you can also serve it with a side of steamed vegetables or a light salad to balance out the meal. For a bit of heat, drizzle some sriracha or sprinkle crushed red pepper flakes over the top.
